Three month ago, Mariza Castro left Honduras. Today, she is in the United States and has a job. Castro works behind the counter at McDonald’s. Speed is an important part of the work life. Fast-food counter workers are expected to serve customers in less than a minute. At Mc Donald’s, they say, “Work fast or you didn’t last”.
Are McDonald’s workers lucky to have jobs? Or are they being exploited? The answer depends on who you talk to. McDonald’s does many good things. For example, no other company hires more young people than McDonald’s. More than half of its workers are under 20 years old. McDonald’s has good record of being minority workers. Thirteen percent of its workers are black. This is better than any other U.S company.
However, the burger house has its critics as well. The pay bothered Edward Rodrigues. He worked for nearly a year at Los Angeles McDonald’s. During that time, he got only 10-cent raise. “I used to joke that working for McDonald’s is the closest thing to slave labor in U.S. Today, most McDonald’s pay about $5.00 an hour. They hire new workers constantly. The restaurant has no other choice because 70 percent of its workers quit or are fired every year.
Eventhough McDonalds’ has its critics, it also gets the praise. Its best workers can get promoted quickly. Just talk to 17-years-old Ameer Abdul Razaaq of Harlem, New York City. “They call me ‘Young Crew Chief around my block’. He also says, “Where else can I get at my age to be promoted and be in charge of many people?”. He sees the job as the first step in his career.
Most McDonald’s crew member never makes it to manager because the job pressure is so intenseand the reward is so few. As one worker put it, “They expect a lot and don’t pay you much.”

Food and energy, two resources crucial to our national stability, were rightly included on the list of topics for the second vice presidential debate on Sunday. But on the issue of food, the debate was unenlightening, devoid of meaningful discussion on the fundamental problems of national food security.
The main reason for this was that the single question on the topic selected for discussion, about climate change-induced declines in food production, addressed only a small sliver of the food self-sufficiency pie. It failed miserably to set off informed debate on the candidates’ broader strategies on food security, a policy goal that has eluded us for the past two decades. We did not expect highly technical policy details from the candidates, but the fourth debate of the 2024 general election season should have at least allowed the candidates to enlighten the public about their broad strategies to augment our food security.
Our economy remains largely agricultural, but we are still, in the last year of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s second term, the world’s largest importer of rice and a major importer of soybeans, sugar, garlic, corn, beef and fruit, despite the President’s 2014 campaign promise to achieve national food self-sufficiency in his first term.
The truth is, food security has never been made integral to our agriculture development program, which has been designed improve the economic conditions of farmers and rural communities through advancement in infrastructure and farming technology.
